Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong (literally ‘floating banana trunk’ in Thai) is the Thai festival where Thais give thanks to the goddess of the river called ‘Pra Mae Khongkha’. Being an agricultural based people, the Thais historically have had a particularly close relationship to their rivers. Thais show their respect to the river by floating a ‘Krathong’ or banana leaf float in worship and asking for forgiveness. It is also a time to say goodbye to misfortune, wash away the sins of the previous year and make wishes for the year to come.
